in honor of him and his orange hair. but let's start this morning with the closely watched trial of george zimmerman. the jury could have this case as early as today. kerry sanders is at the courthouse in sanford, florida. good morning. >> good morning. the defense team is now presenting its closing argument to the jury. they started about an hour ago. they're taking a break right now. but defense attorney mark o'mara is addressing the six-member all women jury in this case. george zimmerman as you remember is being charged with second-degree murder in the february shooting of 17-year-old trayvon martin. now, he has claimed he was shooting him and killed him in self-defense. he's pled not guilty. in the closing argument so far, the defense attorney mark o'mara has said to jurors they have an important responsibility because they must weigh all the evidence and consider a very high

standard. and that is one called beyond a this is what defense attorney mark o'mara has said so far this morning. >> do not allow them to give their words to your ears rather than george's. listen to what he said. there's not a witness in there. not one, state's case, not one who will say to you george zimmerman, yeah, the guy running around the neighborhood looking around. george zimmerman is not guilty. if you have just a reasonable doubt that he acted in self-defense. >> the jury has been listening to evidence for three weeks. in the closing that began yesterday with the prosecutor, prosecutor said that, indeed, this was a second-degree murder and if they consider the evidence that is likely, they will conclude. this is what he had to say.

>> he assumed certain things. that trayvon martin was up to no good. why does this defendant get out of the car if he thinks that trayvon martin is a threat to him? why? why? because he's got a gun. he's got the equalizer. you see how he's exaggerating everything? hold on, even more dangerous. because you know why? this defendant as you heard has studied the law. >> the jury will consider these charges. second-degree murder or they may decide that he is guilty of manslaughter or they may come back and say not guilty. they will head into a jury room with 27 pages of instructions. they will have all of the evidence available to them where they'll be able to consider it. there's no timetable. they can take as much time as they like. and the jurors will consider this evidence over the weekend.

the community is waiting, not only here in this area but in south florida, as well. anticipating there could be a reaction. police have indicated that they encourage people to express themselves, but to do so peacefully. the defense will continue its presentation here today for the next two hours. matt? >> kerry sanders in sanford this morning. thank you very much. lisa, good morning again. >> good morning. >> there's a lot of pressure on a closing argument. you've got to consolidate everything you've brought into this case. >> that's right. >> and leave the jurors with either a concrete conclusion or reasonable doubt. how did the prosecution do? >> well, he hit a lot of the important points for the prosecution. >> well he hit a lot of the important points for the prosecution but raised more questions i thought than gave answers. was there one person was there two people? what was the scenario in the final fight? prosecutors have to proof beyond a reasonable doubt burden. i don't feel he pulled it together and put it away. >> what about the idea of where

the gun was, where it was holstered whether zimmerman could have gotten ahold of it or whether he could have seen it. >> it was behind george zimmerman. he shows that on the reenactment video. for the first time in the trial the prosecutors mentioned that yesterday in closing. >> the prosecution did bring attention to a lot of what zimmerman said on the record. statements, for example, he said he lied when he wasn't following trayvon martin. he lied when he said he didn't know the name of the street in the neighborhood and lied when he said trayvon martin came to him. did they do a good job of discrediting the statements of george zimmerman. >> yes, the prosecution has that but how do you jump from that to second-degree murder. what is the alternate scenario. the jury has heard over and over again the defense scenario that zimmerman is down, trayvon martin is on top. the prosecution in the examination of witnesses has reenacted that defense scenario

but never gave the jury an alternative scenario. how do they think the fight happened. >> the judge agreed and allowed this possible guilty verdict on manslaughter as opposed to only second-degree murder. do you think the prosecution proved either of those charges. >> i think there's enough evidence out there for the jury to conclude that. depends on how they interrupt interpret the evidence. there's pretty clear evidence of ill will. we have the profanity used when he first saw trayvon martin. the shooting was a few minutes later. afterwards he is still calling him the suspect and months later he says the killing is god's plan. i think they've got ill will if they can overcome the self-defense issue. >> thanks very much. appreciate it. let's go over to savannah. breaking news tied to the search for edward snowden. inside the moscow airport where the nsa leader wrapped up a meeting with human rights officials. jim, good morning, what's the

latest? >> reporter: well, snowden and about a dozen human rights lawyers from amnesty international and human rights watch were meeting, as you say, that meeting's come to an end. according to a "new york times" reporter quoting a source inside the meeting, snowden has confirmed receiving offers of asylum from venezuela, bolivia, nicaragua and russia. he's thanked all of them saying he accepts all of these past and future offers. so far, only venezuela has made a formal offer. and he says he needs help guarantee his safety to latin america for all of the reasons we've been reporting for three weeks. u.s. police and interpol on his heels. he also says he'll submit an application for russian asylum, not because he wants to stay here, but he believes that will make him safer as he prepares

for the latin american asylum. >> well, it'll be interesting to see what will happen to snowden after spending three weeks at the moscow airport. we'll check with you later on. both the dow jones industrial and the s&p 500 closed at all time highs on thursday. and that's only part of the picture here this morning. here to bring it into focus we've got maria bartiromo. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. >> if we needed more proof that ben bernanke, the chairman of the fed, can move markets, apparently he did. and him saying a highly accommodative policy is needed for the foreseeable future will make wall street swoon. the stimulus will keep coming? >> that remains in place. this week he basically said look, there's no guarantee that we're going to begin to end the stimulus by the end of the year because the economy is still growing at an anemic place. unemployment is still an issue.

market rallied on those comments, the suggestion that the fed is going to be there for the long haul. >> seems like there's a paradox here. it's great to see the market go up but the economy still needs help from the fed. >> for a long time, several years, bad news has been good news for the stock market. it's like this goldilocks economy. not too hot. not too cold. that's what he likes to see. >> another thing that bernanke said that 7.6% unemployment over states the health of the economy. comment. in other words saying, yes, we have an unemployment rate, 7.6% but it's probably a lot worse than that and that's one of the key measures that he is looking at as a marker to begin rolling back the stimulus. that's the key ingredient there. unemployment is still a major issue. the fed is going to be there. >> another quick thing, mortgage rates. we're starting to see them rise at the time that the housing sector which is the basket case of this economy is getting better. what do you make of it?

>> i think one day we're going to look back and say, hey, remember when we could've borrowed at 4.5%? yes. we moved from 3% to 4.5%. we have seen a move that had shut some people out of the market but we're still looking at very low rates. this market in terms of housing is different across the country. i don't expect a run away market any time soon and i don't think rates are going to skyrocket. we're still at good levels. >> always good to see you. thank you. important news for parents this morning concerned about the levels of arsenic in apple juice. natalie as that story. good morning, the story about arsenic in apple juice, how much is too much? the fda is taking steps to reduce the amount. studies found very low levels of arsenic in the juice. also found in water and soil. dr. oz revealed the findings on the "today" show here in 2011. the fda says the current levels are not dangerous to consumers acceptable amount from 23 parts per billion to 10 parts per billion. the vast majority are already

below the limit. the families of the 20 children and six adults killed in the sandy hook school shootings should get $281,000 each. that's the recommendation from the committee overseeing the more than $11 million in donations collected after the tragedy. the families of the 12 children that witnessed and survived the attack would each get $20,000 and two teachers injured would get a combined $150,000. the remaining $3.7 million would be set aside as a community fund. >> salvage crews are hard at work trying to clear the runway from the debris of the crash of asiana flight 214. tom costello is there again. good morning tom. >> good morning. busy 24-hour period here at sfo. they managed to cut the fuselage in half, they took a big chunk of it, put it on a flat bed

truck and began moving it away to a remote area of the airfield. they've got to get every piece of debris off the runway, fix the landing lights, patch the asphalt and do all of that to get this airport back up and running again. >> from the ntsb, dramatic photos from the debris of flight 214 including rocks and boulders. and this photo showing the extensive fire damage in the economy section of the plane. had passengers not escaped as quickly as they did, the number of dead and injured would have surely be higher. in seoul, some of the flight attendants have now returned home. >> we're lucky to come home but there's still colleagues left in san francisco. it breaks my heart when i think of them. >> salvage crews have begun moving the wreckage to a remote location on the airfield. san francisco is hoping to repair and reopen the runway by sunday or monday. meanwhile they're looking into why the pilots struggled to line

up properly for landing and failed to monitor their air speed. the flight data recorder shows the plane's engines and automatted systems were working proposerly at the time of the crash. >> there's no abnormal behavior of the autopilot or throttle. >> did the crew know how to use the automated systems? said the auto throttle didn't kick in and boost their speed when they came in too low and too slow. but veteran captains tell us, it's not designed to do that if you're configured for landing, it presumes you want to land and not going to kick in at the last minute. natalie? >> tom costello in san francisco, thank you, tom. a rough day during the running of the bulls today in spain. we should warn you the video is graphic. tension rose when one bull charged a young man and tossed him around for almost 30 seconds.

keep it positive. you believe that your child is capable of doing this. it's not a punishment and you want to help them transition. >> but it can be touchy and it's a hard thing. you love your kids and want to help your kid but you think you're doing it in their best interest. how do you approach it as a parent? >> that's a great question. you approach it not necessarily at a life event but you build up to it and you let the child know what your expectations are and what you'll be there to help with and you wean off. i'm not a fan of cutting off directly. we need to be sure that our kids are aware of how to budget. what it means to spend. what it means to save. what it means to invest. how you really plan this and if you're teaching that along the way then you might be able to say i can help you this month. next month. but in three months you'll be on your own for this so how are you going to plan to do that. it's a conversation. >> don't cut them off cold turkey then. >> i agree with that. you need to set out specific

terms to that and not cutting them off cold turkey but give them an incentive. but if you don't do that and you don't stick to the deadline you're probably having that conversation again. >> we asked our viewers to weigh in on twitter with the hashtag money talk. and julia tweeted for example, no, i will always be there for them. they didn't ask to come into this world. if they suffer, i suffer. is that bad parenting? >> i don't think that's bad parenting. i think it's very interesting how connected and tied, i think that many adult parents and adult children think that their parents will always be there for them and i think that's a good thing. but what does that mean? if they want to make a new connection? if they want to make a new career change, if they're having children and lost their job, can they rely on being bailed out or assisted? we have people moving back in with their parents and working with grand children, education,

party and you and your significant other cannot agree on what to prepare. here to show us a few delicious compromises are authors of "just married and cooking" brooke parkers and james christiane. >> how come you don't have the same names? is there a story there? >> no, not now. >> this is one of those things. sometimes it gets difficult when two people have two different ideas of how to throw a dinner party. >> it's all about compromise. keep things happy in the kitchen. >> we start with a beverage? >> your best bargaining chip is a good cocktail. this is a good place to start off. so this is like a ricky, classic ricky but we're making it with -- so ricky is lime juice,ed so ausually vodka or gin. we're making it with johnny walker. i get my stuff. she gets her fresh citrusy drink. >> wow would think about johnny walker in a girl's cocktail.

>> the ricky walker we're calling it. >> we're happy with this. we move in to the apps. he's a typical guy. bacon, bacon, bacon. that's all he wants. i want summer veggies. so we're compromising with our warm tomato salad with a corn and bacon vinaigrette. >> beautiful fresh tomatoes. crispy bacon. goat cheese gets melted on top. >> so then for our main course, again, we want to make everybody happy. i get to grill meat. we throw the grilled meat on top of a pretty salad. we'll make a marinade for the stakes. garlic, soy sauce. >> a pinch or all of it? >> all of it. >> whisk that all together and then over the steak. >> that was fast. >> leave that to marinade. it can sit 30 minutes or overnight. >> look whose veggies are cooking here. >> with the steak salad, i want some beautiful summer peaches. grilled onions.
